Structural Strengthening Services in South Florida
Carbon fiber (CFRP) wraps, column jacketing, steel plate bonding, and external post-tensioning that add load capacity to columns, beams, and slabs — engineered, permitted, and installed in occupied buildings across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County.
Sometimes Restoring a Structure to Its Original Strength Isn't Enough
A column that has lost rebar section to corrosion, a slab that needs to carry a new rooftop amenity, a garage being asked to hold heavier vehicles, a building that has to meet a wind or seismic-style code it was never designed for, or a Phase Two milestone report that finds an element under-capacity — in each case, repair alone brings the structure back to where it started. Strengthening takes it further, adding load capacity without demolition and often without closing the building.
New Age Construction Group installs engineered strengthening systems — carbon fiber reinforcement, column jacketing, steel plate bonding, external post-tensioning, and supplemental framing — for condominiums, parking structures, and commercial buildings across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County.

7 Situations That Call for Structural Strengthening
Strengthening isn't only for damaged buildings. These are the situations where South Florida owners and engineers turn to it — and where repair alone won't get you there.
Rebar section loss from corrosion — when steel has thinned past what restoration can recover, the element needs added capacity, not just new concrete.
A Phase Two milestone finding of an under-capacity element — columns, beams, or slabs that no longer meet their design load must be strengthened to close out the report.
New loads: rooftop amenities, equipment, or heavier vehicles — a change in use adds load the original structure was never designed to carry.
Cracking, sagging, or deflection under load — visible distress in beams and slabs is a capacity problem, not a cosmetic one.
Renovations that cut new openings — removing walls or coring through slabs and beams redistributes load that has to go somewhere.
Original design or construction deficiencies — undersized members, missing reinforcement, or low-strength concrete discovered during investigation.
Code upgrades or change of occupancy — bringing an older building to current wind-load or occupancy requirements.
Strengthening Systems We Install
Matched to the element, the load, and the building — designed by your engineer of record, installed by our crews.
What Is Structural Strengthening?
Structural strengthening is the engineered upgrade of an existing element — a column, beam, slab, or wall — so it can safely carry more load than it currently can. Unlike repair, which returns a damaged element to its original design capacity, strengthening adds capacity: to compensate for steel lost to corrosion, to support new loads from a change in use, to correct original design deficiencies, or to meet a code the building predates. The main systems are carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) wraps and laminates, concrete or steel column jacketing, bonded steel plates and supplemental framing, and external post-tensioning.
Its value in South Florida's occupied buildings is that most of it happens without demolition and without emptying the building — a CFRP wrap adds strength to a garage column in days, with no change to the structure's footprint or clearances.
Repair vs. Strengthening: Which Does Your Building Need?
Repair and strengthening are often confused because they address the same elements. Concrete restoration removes deteriorated concrete, treats the steel, and rebuilds the section — returning the element to as-designed condition. Strengthening is specified when as-designed isn't enough: the engineer's analysis shows the element needs more capacity than it was built with, or corrosion has consumed enough reinforcing steel that restoration alone can't recover it.
On coastal buildings the two frequently go together. A column is restored to sound concrete, then wrapped in carbon fiber to replace the capacity the corroded bars can no longer provide. That combined scope is how many Phase Two milestone findings on columns, beams, and balcony slabs are closed out.
Methods & Materials We Use
Carbon fiber reinforcement — sheets or laminates saturated in structural epoxy and bonded to prepared concrete — is the most versatile system: wrapped around columns it confines the concrete and increases axial and shear capacity; bonded to the tension face of beams and slabs it adds flexural strength. Systems are designed to ACI 440.2R. Column jacketing enlarges and confines a member with new reinforced concrete or a steel shell where more capacity or fire protection is needed. Steel plate bonding and supplemental steel framing carry load across new openings or reinforce under-capacity beams. External post-tensioning adds compression to spans with deflection or cracking problems.
Every system is designed by the engineer of record, installed to manufacturer and ACI specifications on properly prepared substrates, and documented — with pull-off and QC testing where specified — for permit close-out and future inspections.
Strengthening & Milestone Inspections
When a Phase Two milestone inspection or 40-year recertification finds an element under-capacity — a corroded column, a deflecting beam, a balcony slab that no longer carries its design load — the finding can only be closed with an engineered fix, and strengthening is frequently the specified solution. Repairs must commence within 365 days of the report, and counties now enforce that timeline.
New Age executes strengthening to your engineer's design, coordinates the permits, phases the work to keep the building occupied, and delivers the documentation the engineer needs to file the amended report that closes the finding.
An Under-Capacity Element Doesn't Announce Itself Until It Fails
Load capacity is invisible until it's exceeded. Here's what's at stake when strengthening is deferred.
What Determines Structural Strengthening Costs in South Florida
No two strengthening projects are the same. These four factors drive the price of every one we estimate.
Every New Age proposal is free, itemized, and tied to your engineer's design — you'll see exactly what each element costs and why before any work begins. No allowances that balloon later, no hidden mobilization fees.

The Engineered Fix for Under-Capacity Milestone Findings
Florida's milestone inspection law applies to condominium and cooperative buildings three stories or taller at 30 years — 25 near the coast — with reinspection every 10 years. When a Phase Two inspection finds a column, beam, or slab under its design capacity, the finding can only be closed with an engineered solution, and repairs must commence within 365 days of the report.
New Age installs strengthening systems to your engineer's design — CFRP, jacketing, steel, or external post-tensioning — to ACI 440 and manufacturer specifications, phases the work to keep the building occupied, and delivers the documentation the engineer needs to file the amended report that closes the finding.
